Episode 9: Medication, Illness, & Dental Work in Pregnancy

Is taking pain relief safe in pregnancy? What about mental health medication, or antibiotics? What happens if you get COVID while expecting, or need to go under anaesthesia at the dentist? We talk about all this and more with Dr Jyoti in this must-listen episode.

Medication, Illness, & Dental Work in Pregnancy: What is Safe?

The advice given by Dr Ruba on this page and in the podcast is general in nature. See your health practitioner for personalised medical advice.

Women often worry about taking medication in pregnancy, whether that’s pain relief like Panadol, anti-depressants, antibiotics, or having a local anaesthetic at the dentist.

While many medications are proven to be safe for both baby and mum during pregnancy, it’s imperative that you get the right advice before taking anything. For instance, ibuprofen, the active ingredient in over-the-counter medications like Nurofen, is not recommended during pregnancy.

In this episode, we run through the common do’s and don’ts of medication during pregnancy: what’s considered safe, what’s not, and certain medications that might need to be reduced or swapped out during your pregnancy under close supervision from your doctor.

Another common concern for pregnant women is going to the dentist, and we’re happy to say that yes, you can still go to the dentist — and in fact, not going could be harmful to your baby if an infection sets in. We also talk about mental health medication and finding the right balance of medication during pregnancy.

Listen to the full podcast to find out more detail on dentist visits and a range of medication during pregnancy. But for specific advice on any medication, please consult your doctor.

A lot of women will feel very guilty about having to take medication, but all of these medications that we prescribe — and persuade women sometimes to take for their own sake— is very well studied in pregnancy. So there’s a long -standing safety information available.

We look forward to supporting you.
