Episode 7: The ‘Male Factor’ in Fertility

What role does the male partner play in a couple’s fertility? In this episode, we’re talking sperm health. We discuss how much a semen test matters, what a test will tell us, and how poor sperm health can be improved through health changes or overcome by fertility treatments to lead to a healthy pregnancy.

The ‘Male Factor’ in Fertility

A lot of attention is given to the ‘female factor’ when it comes to discussing fertility,  such as how old the woman is,  how many eggs she has left, as well as her health and lifestyle factors. But what about men? What role does the male partner play in a couple’s fertility?

As it turns out, a lot. Not only is the sperm responsible for 50% of an embryo, but a man’s sperm health can be considerably affected by things like age, health and lifestyle. Poor sperm health is a large factor in the infertility we see today, both at our fertility clinic in Brisbane and around the world.

A semen test is one of the first investigations we do as fertility specialists when we meet with a couple who are having troubles conceiving. This is a simple test that can be done here at the clinic, or at home if the sample can be delivered within an hour of collection.

A semen test reveals all sorts of important information, such as sperm count, movement, and appearance — all of which affect the likelihood of a pregnancy occurring naturally. Because sperm have a cycle of around 70 days,  sperm health can often be improved quite quickly by health and lifestyle changes.  Our fertility treatments also include technologies such as ICSI, (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), whereby our scientists select the most viable sperm and inject that directly into the woman’s egg for a greatly improved chance of fertilisation.

For more information about sperm health and how it can be improved or overcome by fertility treatments, please listen to the podcast.

Because it’s 50% of the embryo, it’s very important to have the results of a good semen analysis. It allows us to know exactly what factors might be playing into the couple’s fertility issues, and then we can make attempts to try and improve the quality of the sperm.

We look forward to supporting you.
