Understanding and Managing Recurrent Miscarriage
If you have experienced more than one miscarriage, you are not alone, and it is not your fault. Recurrent miscarriage is more common than many people realise, and for those going through it, finding answers and knowing what to do next can feel overwhelming. In this episode of Fertile Ground, Dr Jyotica Ruba focuses on the management of miscarriage, with a particular focus on recurrent miscarriage.
Dr Ruba explains that the time immediately after a miscarriage is often not the right time to talk about investigations. First and foremost, it is about understanding grief and helping couples through that process. She shares how she approaches those early conversations, what initial information she provides, and the support services she recommends so that couples can reflect and absorb things in their own time.
This episode also covers the most common physical causes of recurrent miscarriage and the investigations that can help identify them. Understanding why a miscarriage has happened is an important step, and knowing there are answers to look for can bring a great deal of reassurance.
Dr Ruba also discusses the steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of miscarriage happening again, and what support is available to help you on that journey. We hope you find this episode helpful.
I think the most important thing to say is it’s not your fault. I think patients do blame themselves and they really are seeking answers about why it happened to them. It’s a very sad time and sometimes immediately after a miscarriage is not the time to talk about investigation. It’s time to understand their grief and the grief process and help them through that.
We look forward to supporting you.
